I am going retract my statement that Rachel Reeves is a disgrace to Labour because of her views that the unemployed must be forced to take any jobs after two years and have their benefit taken off them.
No not because she’s not a disgrace for having such an opinion but because she’s not a disgrace to the Labour party for having such an opinion. Because actually her views are firmly demonstrative that Labour are no different to the Tories when it comes to attacking those on benefits.
Reeves’ views are demonstrative of what Labour actually thinks about those on benefits and their welfare policies. Reeves speaks for their overall viewpoint that those on benefits are “languishing” on welfare and that they should be made to work or lose their benefits.
Labour wants to be seen to be as tough…no, as Reeves says they WILL be even tougher than the Tories on those on unemployment benefit. They promise the “hard working” taxpayer that they will get tougher and crackdown harder on those on welfare because they know that’s what the “hard working” taxpayer wants.
And they know that they NEED to be seen to be even tougher than the Tories because they know that not appearing to be tough on those on benefits won’t get them favorable write ups in the mainstream tabloid press who won’t say anything nice about politicians who are not tough on those on benefits.
Most politicians seeking votes know that not being tough on welfare and promising to crackdown on the unemployed will make them be seen as “soft” by the right-wing tabloid press.
Even left-wing politicians know this and they know that if they say anything which suggests they ARE being soft on welfare and soft on the unemployed they will be ridiculed by the right-wing tabloid press and branded as “lilly livered Guardian reading liberal lefty” who wants to unemployed to be able to sit around on benefits watching daytime TV at the expense of “hard working” taxpayers…or rather Daily Mail and Sun readers (all of whom have jobs of course…yeah right).
Rachel Reeves knows this and Labour knows this. So Rachel Reeves is not a disgrace to Labour, she is in fact a credit to Labour. She’s a credit to the nasty, unemployed bashing party that Labour has become. Well done her.
